THE INSTRUMENTS
French Horn
Building musicians one note at a time
Overview
The French Horn (or simply Horn) is a brass instrument known for its warm, mellow, and noble tone.
It has the longest tubing of the common brass instruments, coiled into its distinctive shape. Sound is produced by buzzing the lips into the mouthpiece, and notes are changed using rotary valves. It is essential in bands and orchestras for its ability to blend beautifully with both woodwind and brass sections.

How To Assemble
- Line up the bell section and slide section, then tighten the locking nut to join them.
- Gently twist the mouthpiece into the receiver.
- Check the slide moves freely along its full length before playing.
Care Instructions
- Oil the valves regularly to keep them moving freely.
- Grease the tuning slides periodically to stop them sticking.
- Empty the water key (spit valve) during and after playing.
- Wipe down the exterior with a soft cloth after playing to remove fingerprints.
- Handle the bell with care — it’s the most exposed and easily dented part of the instrument.
- Have it professionally cleaned inside periodically.
Care Instructions
- Keep the slide lubricated with trombone slide cream so it moves smoothly — slides need more frequent attention than valve instruments.
- Empty the water key regularly during and after playing.
- Wipe down the exterior with a soft cloth after playing.
- Handle the slide carefully — avoid extending it too far or knocking the ends, as dents affect how smoothly it moves.
- Store in the case when not in use.
- Have it professionally cleaned inside periodically.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
