Building musicians one note at a time
Overview
These are mid-sized brass instruments known for their deep, warm, and mellow tone. Like other brass, sound is created by buzzing the lips into the mouthpiece, and notes are changed using valves. They look like smaller Tubas, with the tubing coiled into a compact shape. They are essential in concert bands, playing lyrical bass lines and melodic supporting harmonies that fill out the middle voices of the ensemble.
How To Assemble
- Gently twist the mouthpiece into the leadpipe.
- Check all valve slides are pushed fully in and the valves move freely.
- If using a stand, set it up first and rest the instrument on it rather than a chair or the floor.
Care Instructions
- Oil the valves regularly to keep them moving freely.
- Grease the tuning slides periodically to stop them sticking.
- Empty the water key regularly during and after playing.
- Wipe down the exterior after playing to remove fingerprints and moisture.
- Given their size and weight, always use a proper stand or the case rather than resting them on a chair or the floor.
- Have it professionally cleaned inside periodically.
How To Oil Valves
Full Valve Oiling
- Work on one valve at a time, and keep the valves in order — don’t remove them all at once, since each valve is fitted to its own casing and won’t work correctly in a different one.
- Unscrew the valve cap and lift the valve most of the way out of its casing, without removing it completely.
- Apply 2–3 drops of valve oil directly onto the exposed part of the valve.
- Gently rotate the valve as you lower it back into the casing, to spread the oil evenly along its length.
- Line up the valve guide (a small nub or line on the valve) with the slot in the casing — it will only sit correctly when properly aligned. Never force it; if it doesn’t turn smoothly, lift it out and try again.
- Screw the valve cap back on firmly but gently — it shouldn’t need much force.
- Repeat for each valve, one at a time, then press all the valves up and down a few times to work the oil through before playing.
Quick Top-Up (Without Full Disassembly)
- If a valve is just starting to feel a little sluggish, you don’t always need to remove it fully.
- Unscrew the top valve cap and lift the valve slightly, without taking it all the way out.
- Add a drop or two of oil, then gently work the valve up and down a few times before pressing the cap back on.
How Often to Oil
- Oil valves every few days of regular playing, and any time they start to feel sticky or slow to spring back up.
- Don’t mix up valve oil and slide grease — valve oil is thin and fast-drying and goes on the valves; slide grease is thicker and goes on the tuning slides. Using the wrong one on either part can make it stick.
